life oriented philosophy 1

It is said that there is no point in tracking the source of river & the ancestry of a 'Rishi' the visionary; as these may be insignificant. But it is also true, that a common man may find source of inspiration in the ancestry of a sage, however insignificant it may be. It also satisfies the inquisitiveness & enables him to interpret the sage's life in a better way. In this we notice the prudence of the omnipotent God & the way He works.
It is great wonder as to how a powerful thought, the pure devotion to God and spiritual philosophy get manifested in one single individual! How is it that a person, the very embodiment of purity and penance could be born only in the family of Athavales' of pen, in this 20th century? God's realm has it's own laws, the coming up of Pandurang among the Athavales' can be explained in the light of sacred linage of God centered ancestors.
The great-grand father of Rev.Pandurang Shastriji bore the same name 'Pandurang'. He was a God centered holy & truthful. His son Parshuram Panth led his life honestly as a stamp vendor. He added glory to his father in personal behavior. He once stood a surety for someone. This resulted in the total sacrifice of his personal possessions. He stuck to his promise till he breath the last.
Rev. Pandurang Shastri's grandfather Laxman Rao use to go to the colony of harijans, who were treated as untouchables, to teach 'Manache Shlok'(a sacred text in Marathi). This incident naturally brings out the memories of the devotional saint, Narsinh Mehta. Dynamic ancestors, exhibited courage of visiting the residence of harijans while their offspring Pandurang Shastri- Rev. Dadaji took harijans closer to him self & lovingly mixed them in swadhyay family. How can we describe the lustrous person Pandurang who gave concrete shape to his thought. 'Bhakti (devotion) is a social force'; a religious reformer or a revolutionary philosopher.

Dadaji's father, Rev. Vaijnathji Athalvale who was a man of principles, was well aware as to what type of Education be given to his son, Pandurang who had extra ordinary power of grasping the subject. After Pandurang completed his school education in Mumbai, his father, who was farsighted introduced Pandurang to system of education according to Tapovan as was practiced in ancient India, at Roha. This was done against the wishes of other relatives who were of the opinion that Pandurang must go for attractive & lucrative ICS examination. But Rev. Vaijnath Shastriji wanted him to be a true Brahmin who lives for the sake of culture. Therefore, Rev. Vaijnath Shastriji opened a unique center called by the name 'Saraswati Sansktrut Pathshala' & gave education to his son in that school. A thoughtful and principled society would emerge, only when there is a synthesis of Indian cultural heritage & contemporary western thought. In the Tapovan of Roha students were given deep training in comparitive eastern and western philosophies along with proficiency in English language. The traditional belief that English learning is banned in hermitage-tapovan type of education was given good bye. The students of the Tapovan no longer remain narrow minded, bookist scholar. All this was due to the foresight and vision of Rev. Vaijnathji the father of Rev. Pandurang Shastri.
The year 1942, was a memorable year in the history of independence struggle of India. The entire nation was in turmoil due to the sense of insecurity. Mumbai became depilated. That was a turning point in the life of Rev. Dadaji, his father, Rev. Vaijnathji who was busy with his Swadhyaya activity, morning and evening for last sixteen years. Due to throat trouble his voice got chocked up, therefore the responsibility of conducting Swadhyaya and delivering discourses fell on shoulders of his son Pandurang, who was only twenty two year old. He commenced his Swadhyaya with the discourses on Karikas of Gaud Pada on Mandukya Upanishad.
The Vyaspeeth (Seat of teaching) in the Bhagwad Geeta Pathshala (from where Rev Dadaji has been delivering his discourses) is really a life inspiring thought centre. For, it fills the lives of listeners with sweetness by instilling in their lives qualities of equality, self awareness, devotion and energy.
The roots of the great tree of Swadhyay process are nurtured by the pure and divine waters of non demanding attitudes. This attitude traces back to the ancestors of Rev. Pandurang Shastri. Rev. Vaijnath Shastriji was firm on the vow of non-demanding inspite of the difficult times.
The attitude of non demanding is in the very blood of Rev. Dadaji. Today Swadhyaya work has grown enormously but in the early days, Rev. Dadaji had to face lot of difficulties and tests. Rev. Dadaji faced a number of obstacles and difficulties while stabilizing and progressing thoughts of Swadhyaya, but he never compromised his dedications to principles. He never surrendered before the circumstances. He boldly took the challenges, faced them fearlessly and conquered them.
During the inaugural ceremony of Tatvajnan Vidyapeeth (University, Rev Dadaji instituted to impart the kind of education he received, to modern day youth) in 1958 Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, then Vice-President of India, told Rev Dadaji 'how can You run an institute without demanding and accepting donations! There is no such incidence in history so far known. There is nothing wrong in making an appeal to people for the sake of religion and culture. Society is good and noble, one has to go to the society & demand from it . How will the society know your mission, if you don't approach it.'
The very meaning and substance of Dadaji's non demanding attitude is allowing money or means from a person if is thoroughly convinced by the thought moreover Rev. Dadaji refuses several times so that the urge in a person to offer for God is tested. People feel the sense of gratitude by coming to Swadhyaya and offering for Swadhyaya. They feel lucky if they become instrumental in serving God through Swadhyaya.

'Everyone needs money for carrying out any social work, while establishing the Banaras Hindu University, I also did approached society'. Rev. Dadaji replied 'I have firm faith in God that my work has God's approval, god will take care of my work and he'll run it, provided my faith and devotion for him is absolute. Perhaps for you, society is absolute but for me God is absolute and society is instrumental'.
To understand issues of human dignity and equality across diverse cultures and traditions, Rev, Dadaji has read extensively. This self-education in world cultural and religious history has led him to understand the essential of social dialectics and liberal rationalism, but he has also rejected their materialistic exclusivity. He does not demonize liberalism, Marxism or any other ism. He has a disarming ability to disagree without being disagreeable and to set forth his views without being contentious.
As a participant in Second World Religions Congress in Japan in 1954, rejecting both unbridled materialism and fatalism, he stressed the salience of the Vedic way of life for creating integrated personality, a universal man. He spoke of the relevance of the Bhagwad Gita (Gita in short) in resolving the predictament of modern man and solving the problems of material life., both at individual and social levels. He proposed an alternative vision, based on self-less love, dignity accorded to all , and co- sharing of community, well and weaving in to a unified approach to life. But he had no answer when he was asked weather there was any village or community in India which lived by these ideals . He took it as a challenge and decided to work out his ideas at home instead of becoming an academician or a roving philosopher in the West, as Arthur Holly Compton, A Nobel laureate physicist from America wanted him to do.
On his return to India, Rev Dadaji Continued delivering discourses at Shrimad Bhagvad Gita Pathshala. Beginning in the mid-fiftees, an increasing number of young professional such as solicitors, accountants, physicians, engineers, teachers etc in Mumbai area were attracted by Rev. Dadaji's ideas. Like others they were skeptics because their idealism was not reflected in the world outside. They found old formulations useless and were keen to know where to find new understandings of relationship between God and man without abandoning their inherited traditions . Rev. Dadaji clearly showed them that the philosophical ideas of Vedanta are magnificent in conception but beyond capacity of most individuals who attempt to live by such percepts. His first task was to enable people to raise their capacities to meet these goals.
He picked nineteen of the young men among his early listners and had lengthy and intense discussions with them at Mumbai's sea beach for a period of more than two years. These young men, and whoever has come in contact with Rev. Dadaji, have been attracted by a certain loftiness and integrity of his character, his learning , his infectious optimism and his self-less love for others. Rev Dadaji inspired city-based professionals to go to the villages of Saurashtra region of Gujarat for a fortnight on Bhaktipheri (devotional tours or visits), with an intention to make the villagers aware of human brotherhood and to shake them off their cynism which had crept in everywhere. Eventually bhaktipheri was to serve as key to mobilizational activities of Swadhyay. Though initially cynical, this city-bred young professionals went to Saurasthra (north Gujarat). The original trickle became a stream in sort time.
Himself a married man and a householder Rev. Dadaji, believes that home Is the true hermitage of a man. By dutifully performing the obligations of a house holder the individual becomes heroic. How can words describe such unique person who has good fortune of becoming the life partner of Rev. Dadaji an epoch making personality. Ideals of womanhood are reflected in Rev. Tai's personality. Rev. Tai: every word she utters is filled with love and overflowing affections leads one to enrichment. Adarniya Didi , the fragrance of the garden of of Rev. Dadaji's and Rev. Tai's married life is a moving spirit, inspiration and zest of Swadhyaya Pariwar. She is synthesis of head and heart.
Shes is endowed with unbound beauty of character, emotions and intellect. But Rev. Dada's family starts from here but includes millions of Swadhyayees and heartily invites whole world to be part of it.
THE PHILOSOPHY THAT CAN BE ENLIVED ....
Revered Dadaji is activist philosopher, also can be seen as a social scientist or a social reformer. According to Rev.Dadaji, philosophy, which is a science of reality, should not become merely an intellectual jugglery of cold logic and refined language. It should be both a view and a way of life applicable to common man as well as the scholar. Philosophy must affect life, transform it and also elevate it. A philosophy which fails to transform and elevate our live from merely human to the divine level : then only two alternatives follow; either we have not understood our philosophy or philosophy not worth studying. The fruits of the study of philosophy are foresight and insight.

Rev. Dadaji's philosophy is both life transforming and life elevating. A philosopher accorign to Rev. Dadaji is jnanpurna (full of wisdom), bhav-purna (full of kindness and emotions) and Kruti Sheel (ever engaged in elevating human spirit). Rev. Dadaji's philosopher is a friend and guide of the mankind. Philosophy not only satisfies intellectual curiosity but also enhances the emotional, aesthetic, moral and spiritual dimensions of human personality. It enriches life and gives meaning and purpose to human existence.
This self-assertion, self-awareness and self-esteem removes gradually many evils and weaknesses from man and bring gradual transformation and elevation of life.

Understanding of indwelling God establishes relationship of Divine Brotherhood between man and man under the fatherhood of God. Once we accept the doctrine of Rev. Dadaji's indwelling God, then, there is established a bridge between man and man. Though one man differs from another man, still there is common bond between them and that bond is the indwelling presence of God. Thus the relationship through God, through Bhakti becomes self-transcending. One can raise gradually from reverence to oneself, reverence to other human selves, reverence to plant life, animal life and finally reverence to the entire creation of God. All the barriers built by man get destroyed and man becomes citizen of kingdom of God.
According to Rev. Dadaji the best study of the mankind is man himself. The central focus of Rev. Dadaji's attention and concern is man. Rev. Dadaji is not much interested in building theories of cosmology and epistemology. According to Rev. Dadaji, all the problems of a modern man are due to alienation of man from himself and his creator. The remedy is Swadhyay (Self-knowledge / Self development ). For Rev. Dadaji to be is to be related. The individual is a spark/part of The Divine. One owes one's existence to god who is the inner most aspect of our total being. The continuous awareness of this indwelling divinity restores human dignity and one starts adoring and respecting one self.
THE PERSONALITY THAT IS UNIVERSAL ....
Rev. Pandurang Shashtri Atahvale affectionately called by the members Swadhaya family as Dadaji (namely elder brother), is the founder and pioneer of the perennial Swadhayay process. His personality is not only multidimensional but also enigmatic; containing within itself seemingly contradictory traits. He is the confluence of the best in the eastern and western civilizations. He is also the meeting ground of traditional ancient wisdom and modern scientific, rational humanitarian thought.
He combines in him the traits of conservatism as well as radicalism. He is extremely cautious and highly adventurous. He is at home with every section of the society, irrespective of gender, age, caste, creed, community, religion, race, nationality, language, socio-economic status, educational status, etc., and yet taller than any one of them, he is a universal personality.
For all most all of those who have come into contact with his vision and have been touched by it, it has brought about a permanent transformation in their lives. To outside observer his vision is seen as a bold experiment of social creation and an evolving economic design that liberates the individual from the old confirming ways of work and living. His vision appears to be socially attainable, humanistically desirable and feasible on economic grounds.
It is equally compatible with earth and its finite resources, and is proving successful in bringing people closer to each other, gathering the alienated back in the warmth of community, and giving precedence to the creative forces of the human psyche over economic ones.
Instead he practices Sarvadharma Sweekar (Acceptance of all the religions). His emphasis on Bhakti (Devotion towards God) makes him truly a universal ,unifying personality.
THE SWADHYAY : SILENT YET SINGING REVOLUTION ....
Rev.Dadaji's way, the Swadhyay is a multifaceted life-transforming phenomenon that has reached almost one hundred thousand villages and also spreading among Indians who have migrated in various parts of the world. It has touched the lives of nearly 15 million people. In a way it is showing reemergence of transformative power of concept of indwelling God.
The Swadhyay is ongoing dynamic activity and definitely universal in appeal. Rev. Dadaji realized that his thinking would be exposed to changes in time and in thinking, new influences and theories which would invariably alter the current of thought but foundation he gave to Swadhyay has proved to be timeless, a foundation based on the wisdom of Bhagvad Gita. Rev .Dadaji visioned that it was possible for different faith to belong to one community, the community of man, rather family of mankind the Swadhyay-Parivar.

REFLECTIONS : IN THE EYES OF ELITE ....
Dr. Rudolf Haubst (Institute for International Research on St. Nicholos of Cusa) :

I have Studied "Bhagvad Gita" in Germany but after listening to Pujya Dadaji's analysis of "Bhagavad Gita", I feel that even Saint Nicholos, the great scholor of Chritianity would have been attracted towards "Bhagavad Gita". Through the depth and width of his discourses Rev. Dada reaches the heart of the listeners.
Sir John Tempelton (at the Award ceremony of Templeton Prize) :

Today we rejoice that the person that is selected by the nine judges who come form the all five major religions, is someone who has done something new in the spiritual information that is different from anything done before. It is a new concept which thrills me. I could not have imagined 1,00,000 villages would now be living by the principle pf Mr. Athavale. Perheps this concept would be useful in America, Europe and many other areas. This is a thrilling new invention in spiritual development information. It is a great joy to see what Mr. Atahvale has achieved, accomplished in one lifetime and how it is rolling in future.
Dr. Helmet Pfeiffer (Translator of 'Vision of of God', a book dedicated to Rev. Dadaji from Geman to Latin) :

I can not but believe the fact that five lac people assemble to listen to one man who talks about God. Where else it could happen?
Dr. Betty Unterberger :

Swadhyay is devoid of any religious or secterian boundaries and limitations. Rev Dadaji has imbibed in himself the knowledge of Indian culture and modern science, techonology and philosophy. What we have understood of Rev. Dada and Rev. Dada's work, it gives feeling of touching only the tip of an iceberg.
Mr. Bashar Muvier Salih (Public Relation Manager in Behrin) :

Brotherhood amongst mankind is the fundamental principle of "Koran". Allah is almighty, by whatever name one may call. I would not have invited Rev. Dadaji to Behrin if there was no similarity between Rev. Dadaji's and Islam's preaching. Mainly, he spoke before Muslim community and people welcomed his Philosophy.
Mr. R.K. Shrivastrav :

Dada is a highly accessible philosopher, a scholar and teacher with extraordinary persuasive powers. He combines an intense inner life of mind and the equally intense life of an active and a constructive worker. Though, he has never attended a university, he is a university unto himself.

RAJAT JAYANTI ( SILVER JUBILEE )
Shrimad Bhagwad Gita Pathshala was founded on the Vijaya Dashami of 1926. It had progressed determinately during last twenty five years overcoming the early difficulties. It depended only on divine help. It removed despondency and dependence from the lives of men and inspired and enthused them. The Pathshala was entering into youth.
An organization run by a trust thinks of a jubilee building or some such thing and plans the next golden jubilee. This Pathshala was however an institute which taught the lessons for building up new lives, wanted to express it's gratitude through activity which would inspire. In this way it was the most unusual and unique celebration.
A play 'Nachiketa' was staged on this occasion. Some Swadhyayees proposed that donation should be invited for establishing a permanent fund to run the Pathshala. They approach the founder of the Pathshala Rev. Vaijnathji and pressed their proposal. When Rev. Dadaji came to know this, he told his father 'why not leave one such institute to be run on the will of God alone, and Rev. Vaijnathji readily accepted Rev. Dadaji's proposal .

BHAV MILAN SAMAROH ( GOLDEN JUBILEE )
The Swadhyay Parivar has already crossed the borders of India and has established itself all over the world. But it's genesis is in the Bhagwad Gita Pathshala. The Pathshala nourishes intellectual needs of the people and answers all the question regarding human life and religion. The Pathshala has so far guided thousands of people and turned them into positive thinkers and constructive workers. Pathshala is verily the most loved one of God. Her golden jubilee has taken the form of Bhav Milan Samaroh. Shrimad Bhagwad Gita Pathshala has grown like a large shady banyan tree during last fifty years. Pathshala had not to appeal for funds; for membership of any sort; and she marched through the five long decades. When the proposal for golden jubilee celebration was put before Rev. Dadaji, he said ' why do we celebrate the jubilees ?
we usually celebrate them, either to honour the workers who have worked hard over the years or to raise funds for sound results. But We have no need of either of this. Our Swadhyayees worked over these years for the love of God and entirely depend on Him for the running of this unique institute.' Rev. Dadaji continued ' people by and large feel it was possible in the good old days that the God provided everything to Narsinh Mehta and Mira Bai but in modern era it remains only hypothesis. Some more may believe that God may help in the cases of rare individuals, but nobody could believe that an organization flourishes with the help of God and God only.

This seemingly impossible has become reality for The Bhagwad Gita Pathshala with the blessings bestowed upon by God. For this reason only golden jubilee is to be celebrated.'

gratitude to the seat of discourse that emanated knowledge and imparted life education. Whole Swadhyaya Pariwar assembled in Mumbai on 24,25,26 January 1976. The Swadhyayees, who were feeling themselves esteemed in woking for a universal cause and convinced with the vision of Swadhyay, came on their own, spending from their own pocket.
They numbered almost 50,000. The congregation deliberated on various aspects of universal culture affecting the youth , woman and the religion. They came from fourteen states of India speaking different languages. It was clear that the philosophy of Swadhyaya cohere person speaking different languages and belonging to different cults. This was the great achievement of Bhav Milan Samaroh. On 26th of January, every year since 1976, Swadhyay Parivar while celebrating Yogeshwar Day, remembers fond memories of Bhavmilan Samaroh.
HIRAK MAHOTSAV : THE DIAMOND JUBILEE
Shrimad Bhagwad Gita Pathshala is unique in itself in the whole world. It is not a building surrounded by walls, situated in Mumbai. But it exists wherever the message of Bhagwad Gita has reached through Swadhyaya; wherever the Swadhyayees are active in spreading the message of Gita, the Pathshala is functioning over there. It is not an immovable property in the frame work of time and space. It has spread over this land and beyond. The Diamond jubilee of such an institute is a confluence in itself. The youth wing with the spirit of soldiers, identifying them selves as soldiers of God, celbrated this ocassion through a cycle, scooter rally. A procession that followed the rally astonished the people of Ahmedabad when the members of Vaghari tribes (seen to be uneducated and very backward) passed in the procession chanting Sanskrit verses.
The Shastri stadium of Ahmedabad overflowed with more than a lac of congregation. There were persons present from all walks of life including personality from other religions. The Swadhyayees of Ahmedabad has devotedly arranged for Bhavpheri (meeting people affectionately as divine brothers and sisters) during last two years.
On 10th January 1988 the Chowpaty of Mumbai was over flowed with the cultural congregation of Swadhyayees. Three lacs Sagarputras ( Sons of Sea) representing region from Okha to Goa had gathered . Twenty five thousand youth also joined . The entire Swadhyaya Pariwar was jubilant . The Seven Matsyagandha (devotional fishing boats - known as floating temples) were inaugurated by Rev. Dadaji. With that total number of such Matsyagandha reached the figure of eighty. ' Unto the last' was Visualized by Ruskin , this vision of Ruskin was turned into reality by Rev. Dadaji. After a long passage of fourteen years the followers of Mahatma Gandhi on behalf of 'Rasthra Bhasha Prachar Samiti' unanimously decided to present Mahatma Gandhi Award to Rev. Dadaji . Energetic and disciplined Swadhyaya Pariwar left lasting imprints on the city of Mumbai. It was clearly evident that Shrimad Bhagwad Gita Pathshala has proved again that it has no barriers.
SUDHA VARSH : (CELEBRATIONS OF DIAMOND JUBILEE )
Swadhayay Parivar over these years has grown by leaps and bounds. People across the geographical as well as cultural boundaries has been moved by the life inspiring thoughts of Pathshala and are convinced to redesign their lives according to these thoughts. Rev. Dadaji, all his life has made enormous efforts to present human beings, their true dignity by making them aware of Divinity within. Overwhelmed by the sense of gratitude towards Rev. Dadaji, the imparter of human dignity, Swadhyay Parivar started celebrating Rev. Dadaji's birthday on 19th October as Manushya Gaurav Din (human dignity day) since the year 1990. Year after year, this expression of reverence and gratitude continued. In 1994, Krutajnata Samaroh was celebrated at various places. Like wise, Bhav Sampark Samaroh, at Kurukshetra, Hariyana in 1996, Hujur Sahib Tirth Yarta at Nanded, Maharashtra in 1997 were celebrated.
In the year 2000 Rev. Dadaji's 80th Birthday was celebrated at Bharuch, Gujrat as Ashiti Vandana. Although, the functions were celebrated at different places with novel expressions, but at every occasion one aspect that of, Swadhyayees meeting hut to hut and heart to heart by visiting thousands of villages and various places with the understanding of Divine Brotherhood under the Fatherhood of God remained the same.
The world has been amazed and started gazing with hope towards this unique way of life as shown by Rev. Dadaji. Awards and appreciations started flowing towards Rev.Dadaji. The awards, local as well as international reflect universality of Rev. Dadaji's vision.
The year 2001, the year of Platinum Jubilee of Pathshala is being celebrated as 'Sudha Varsh' reflecting the eternal zest of Pathshala. The lacs of Swadhyayees with the sense of gratitude towards Pathshala, mirrored the same dynamism as that of Pathshala in their celebrations.

They decided to carry the foundational thought of indwelling God, which Pathshala has taken efforts to inculcate into the lives of people. About 3 and half lacs Swadhyees reached to about 45 lacs people with the vibrant thought of Trikal Sandhya, as given by Rev. Dadaji. Trikal Sandhya as Rev. Dadaji says is an atom bomb, apparently small in its application but mega in its manifestation. The blast of Trikal Sandhya does not annihilate humanity but creates true humans who are filled with gratitude towards God, who is generator and operator of life. Swadhyayees are convinced that this fact must be reminded to one's own self, atleast on three most auspicious moments of the day.
At dawn , when one awakes, God bestows the Gift of memory which fills human life with joy of living.
At the time of meal, once again, the Divine touch can be felt, when God energizes by converting meal of whatever kind into life energy.
At night, God endows blessings of sleep to mankind whereby he imparts serenity from hassles of this world by this God rejuvenates us to become ready for next day's play.
It was a true way to show reverence towards Pathshala by conveying the thought of Trikal Sandhya to millions. The fragrance of these was felt wherever the Swadhyayees met to share their experience with Adarniya Didiji (Mrs. Jayashree Athavale Talwalkar), at Kritishil Milans (Congregation of this Swadhyayee who went with trikal Sandhya) and on 19th October 2001, all over the world birthday of Rev. Dadaji was celebrated at around 14000 centers.
